Our History

Our History

Nantz Mower & Small Engine started from a growing demand for repairs and service of mowers in a shop behind a house. A side gig during an offseason of piano tuning ended up becoming a quickly growing business. At Nantz Mower & Small Engine, we have years of knowledge and experience to help get you started or get you back on your feet.

For our owner, Damon Nantz, it all started in 1947. This is the year his father spent time with a tractor built from an old Model-T Ford, clearing land, and building both a house and a garage from used lumber. By the time Damon came along in 1971, everything was in place to shape Nantz Mower & Small Engine’s future. Six out of seven days a week, he would come home to a project his dad had for them to work on together, which helped him learn traits he would use for years to come.

His first experience with mowers was at the young age of 12, when he started working for G.T. Gatlin, then the owner of Weaverton Lumber Co., mowing . After mowing only three weeks, the riding mower broke down, leaving his new job up in the air. With no choice but to fix it himself, he took the mower to his dad’s garage to see if they could find the problem and create a solution. With his father’s help in a little garage in Anthoston, Kentucky, the formerly broken mower was good as new. Little did he know, this moment would be a small moment that would have a big impact on his life. For years we’ve been brought mowers and small engines that were broken with unknown problems and nonexistent solutions, but we’ve worked hard to bring them back to life, time after time.

With his new & improved lawnmower, at age 18, he averaged mowing 36 lawns a week and spent most of his spare time doing repairs and rebuilding mowers during the winter months. Throughout his childhood, he gained the experience and knowledge that brought him to where he is today.

Us Today

Fast forward to 2009, his wife, Julie, had persuaded him to start tuning pianos, but due to slow summer months, Nantz found himself, once again, working on mowers in a shop behind the house.

It seemed as if no matter what his current career was, he always ended up back doing what he knows best, repairing mowers and small engines, just like he used to with his father. So in 2016, he opened up a part-time repair shop, but word spread fast about the quality of the service provided. There was a quick realization that the shop behind the house was too small, and it was time to start looking for a permanent storefront. In early 2020, an old auto parts store caught our owner’s eye, and after some consideration, he purchased the new store and opened it on November 25, 2020.
